Terms of Use

The agreement between you and us for using Bookyard and lending books through it.

Last updated 11 October 2026

These terms are the agreement between you and M.A.K. PFA, established in Bucharest, Romania ("Bookyard", "we", "us"), for your use of the Bookyard app and this website. By creating an account you accept them. If you do not, please do not use the app.

Who can use Bookyard

You must be 13 or over to create an account. Readers are people you add to your library; they never sign in, and you are responsible for what you enter about them. Only add someone as a reader if you are allowed to share their details with us. How we handle all of it is in the Privacy Policy.

Your account and your library

You sign in with Apple, Google or an email address. Keep control of whatever you sign in with: anyone who can sign in as you can see and change your library. One account is for one person.

Every account starts with its own library, which it owns. You can invite other users to manage your library with you; they see and can change everything in it, readers included. The owner can remove them, and they can leave. If you join someone else's library, your own is paused (its books leave every group shelf) and comes back unchanged when you leave.

You can delete your account from the app's settings at any time. Deleting it deletes the library you own, with everything in it, even if other users manage it with you. Its loans in progress end with it: requests are closed, and a book you are still holding is marked lost in its owner's library. The users on the other side are told. Deletion is permanent and we cannot restore what it erases.

Lending between users

Bookyard helps users agree on loans; we are not a party to them. Books are lent from one user's library to another's, and the users stay responsible for them. We do not hold, collect, deliver or insure any book. If a book is late, lost or damaged, the users settle it between themselves. Marking a book as lost or given in the app records what you agreed; it does not decide who is right.

Groups

A group is a set of libraries that share their books with each other. Whoever creates a group is its admin: admins invite libraries, remove them, appoint other admins, and choose whether every member may share the invite link too. A library cannot leave a group, or be removed from it, while it has a loan in progress there. Be careful whom you invite: the members of a group see the books you share with it and the names of the users who manage your library.

What you add is yours

You keep every right you have in what you add: your library, your photos, your messages. You give us only the permission we need to run the service: to store it, show it to you and to the users you share it with, and to process it as the Privacy Policy describes.

A book that is new to our shared catalogue (its title, author, ISBN, description and cover) may be reviewed by our staff and offered to other users who own the same book. You give us permission to do that with the details and cover photo you added. Who added a book is never shown.

Our content

The app, this website and our shared catalogue of books (its titles, authors, ISBNs, descriptions, age ranges and the covers we have processed, and the way it is put together) belong to us or to those who license them to us. Your licence is to use them through the app, for your own library; it does not let you copy or reuse the catalogue or any part of it elsewhere.

What we ask of you

  • Do not add anything unlawful, offensive, or that you have no right to share, and keep people out of cover photos.
  • Do not use messages to harass anyone, or for advertising or spam.
  • Do not copy, scrape, crawl or extract our catalogue, covers or other users' data, whether by bots, scripts, unofficial apps or any other automated means, and do not use them to build a competing service or dataset.
  • Do not use the app other than through our official apps, and do not try to reach another user's data, probe or overload our systems, or get around the limits of a plan.
  • Do not reverse-engineer, resell or redistribute the app, except where the law allows it.

We may remove content, or suspend or close an account, that breaks these rules. Where it is reasonable, we will tell you why first and give you the chance to ask us for a copy of your data.

For scraping or other automated access, abuse of other users, or a threat to the security of the service, we may suspend or close the account at once, without notice. A suspended account cannot use the app until we lift the suspension. You can still ask us at [email protected] for a copy of your own data, and why the account was suspended.

Your licence to the app

We grant you a personal, non-transferable, non-exclusive licence to use the app on devices you own or control, within the rules of the store you got it from. The app is licensed to you, not sold, and we keep every right we have not expressly given you.

Price and subscriptions

Bookyard is free to use, and borrowing, lending and groups are never limited. The free plan has limits on what a library can add; Bookyard Plus is an optional subscription that removes them. What is free, what Plus adds, billing, cancelling and refunds are in Subscriptions & Refunds, which forms part of these terms.

The app stores' part in this

If you got the app from Apple's App Store:

  • This agreement is between you and us alone. Apple is not a party to it.
  • We, not Apple, are responsible for the app, its content, maintenance and support. Apple has no obligation to provide either.
  • If the app fails to conform to a warranty that cannot be excluded, you may tell Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price. Apple has no other warranty obligation for the app.
  • We, not Apple, handle any claim that the app or your use of it breaks a law, creates a product liability, or infringes someone's intellectual property.
  • You confirm you are not in a country under a US embargo or designated as supporting terrorism, and not on a US list of prohibited or restricted parties.
  • Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.

If you got it from Google Play, Google Play's terms also apply to the download and to purchases, and Google is not a party to this agreement.

What we do not promise

We work to keep Bookyard available and correct, but we provide it "as is". We do not promise it will be uninterrupted or error-free, that book details, ages or covers found in public catalogues or read by AI are right, or that a notification will always arrive. Check a book's age range yourself before you hand it to a reader.

Limits on our liability

Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. Subject to that, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for books lent, borrowed, lost or damaged between users, and our total liability to you is limited to the greater of what you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, or €50.

Changes to the app and to these terms

We may change the app, add features and remove ones that do not work out. We will never move something that is free behind a payment. If we change these terms in a way that materially affects you, we will tell you in the app before the change takes effect; using Bookyard after that means you accept the new terms.

Ending it

You can stop at any time by deleting your account. We may end this agreement if you break these terms, or if we close the service, in which case we will give you reasonable notice and time to ask us for a copy of your data.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of Romania, and its courts hear any dispute. If you are a consumer, that takes nothing away from you: you keep the mandatory protections of the law where you live, and you may bring proceedings in your own country's courts.
